A mood of impending doom swept across the country in the spring of 2020 with the spread of Covid-19 and a sharp downturn in the economy. And then, like a thunderclap, the killing of George Floyd at the hands of the police in Minneapolis sent shock waves through the body politic. Protesters took to the streets nationwide, and in Richmond, Virginia, demonstrations focused on Monument Avenue with its statues of Confederate generals.

On July 10th, protesters toppled Jefferson Davis from his pedestal, and two days later I drove down to Richmond to document the last days of the grand boulevard of the Lost Cause.

.I have witnessed this city’s ups and down for almost five decades – the bankrupt 70s, AIDs in the 80s, 9/11, Hurricane Sandy, and the city’s recent economic ascendance. In the spring of 2020, with the trees bursting into bloom, the city that never sleeps came to an almost unthinkable halt. These photographs document that moment when time seemed to freeze, when the crowds dispersed, when the stage was left vacant, and, for once, the show did not go on.
