As is typical in New York, artists have infiltrated the loft buildings and warehouses, either renting studios or living semi-legally as long as they can get away with it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.brianrose.com\/journal\/studio.htm\"target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"font-family: arial;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.brianrose.com\/journal\/studio.jpg\" \/><\/a><br \/><span style=\"font-family:arial;\">Artist&#8217;s studio beneath the elevated subway<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:arial;\">I was there for the <\/span><a style=\"font-family: arial;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.agastbrooklyn.com\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\">Annual Gowanus Artists Studio Tour (A.G.A.S.T.)<\/a><span style=\"font-family:arial;\">, and specifically to visit <\/span><a style=\"font-family: arial;\" href=\"http:\/\/www.hilarylorenz.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Hilary Lorenz<\/a><span style=\"font-family:arial;\">, an artist I have known and admired for a number of years. Here&#8217;s one of her recent pieces:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"font-family: arial;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.brianrose.com\/journal\/print_4.jpg\" \/><br \/><span style=\"font-family:arial;\">White Water Washed \u2022 Hilary Lorenz<\/span><br \/><span style=\"font-family:arial;\">30&#8243; x 22&#8243; Intaglio and archival digital print 2006<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:arial;\">It is astonishing how many artists there are in New York despite the constant struggle for affordable work space. There were about 150 showing their work for the tour, highly talented individuals working mostly under the radar, that is, not represented by the major commercial galleries in the city.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.brianrose.com\/journal\/eagle.htm\"target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"font-family: arial;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.brianrose.com\/journal\/eagle.jpg\" \/><\/a><br \/><span style=\"font-family:arial;\">Third Avenue<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.brianrose.com\/journal\/ironworks.htm\"target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"font-family: arial;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.brianrose.com\/journal\/ironworks.jpg\" \/><\/a><br \/><span style=\"font-family:arial;\">9th Street<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.brianrose.com\/journal\/door.htm\"target=\"_blank\"><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"font-family: arial;\" src=\"http:\/\/www.brianrose.com\/journal\/door.jpg\" \/><\/a><br \/><span style=\"font-family:arial;\">9th Street<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-family:arial;\">The Gowanus Canal area is definitely on the radar of the real estate developers, however, and its days as a gritty urban gray zone may be numbered. For the moment, it remains in suspended animation&#8211;a hodgepodge of industrial buildings, row houses, vacant lots, a taxi depot, a new tourist hotel, an Islamic school, a Macintosh repair shop, artists&#8217; studios, a Lowes Home Improvement store, and so on.
