On
assignment in Amsterdam photographing the views from the CS Post building
adjacent to Central Station.
I took my 7 year old son Brendan along on a typically mercurial, Dutch
summer day. Blustery and showery there was still the promise of an
opening in which to catch the 5pm departure of a cruise ship.
I told Brendan that photographers depend on luck, but that you have
to put yourself out there to get lucky. So, we headed out in the wind
and rain, and once on the roof I pointed to a promising patch of blue
sky to the west. At 5 the sun broke through, the ship's horn bleated,
and I told Brendan he was my lucky charm.
