February 12, 2006. Orchard Street on the Lower East Side of New
York the evening following a record 26.9 inch snowfall. After the
near blizzard storm subsided, I went out with my view camera with
the intention of adding to my ongoing
documentation of this historic and rapidly changing neighborhood.
The conditions were difficult, however, and I only managed three
pictures in the chill wind before slipping and falling with my camera
into a snowbank.
Orchard Street lay empty and hushed, looking timeless and immutable
a hundred or more years since the construction of its buildings.
This moment of frozen stillness was short-lived, however, as the
city efficiently plowed the streets and cleared the sidewalks. By
the next morning, the usual hustle and bustle had returned to the
Lower East Side and throughout New York.
