My
assignment was to photograph the H&M store at 42nd Street and
Fifth Avenue in New York with an emphasis on the specific location
on one of the principle crossroads of Manhattan.
After doing a number of pictures near the corner with hundreds of
people and cars swirling around I retreated to the elevated plaza
surrounding the Public Library.
It was chilly, a bit windy, the light was beginning to fall, when
I did the picture at right. It was one of those moments when things
come together, the late sunlight hitting the Chrysler Building, the
blur of cabs and pedestrians.
What started as a mundane assignment ended up a poetic distillation
of space and movement.
